With the standard “tall” (12oz) cup of coffee at Starbucks going for $1.85, it makes sense to brew your coffee at home. While it seems like paying $12-$15 for a pound of good coffee is pricy, it still saves you money and gives you a much better cup of coffee.

While there are many methods to brew coffee, I think a french press or press pot gives the best results. The standard amount of coffee used to brew in a french press is 7g coffee for 4oz water, meaning 21g for 12oz. A pound of coffee is about 450g. Even with an excellent $15/lb bag of coffee, that works out to $0.70 for a 12oz cup of coffee you can enjoy at home.
